Trail magic is simply described as any way of helping a thru-hiker by making them happier or making their life easier. Some people intentionally set out to bring trail magic to hikers while others do it spontaneously after talking to a hiker. People who provide or give the magic are often referred to as trail angels and have been a wonderful group of people to meet. Some trail angels are past hikers, others are church groups, some are people who love the hiking community, some are veterans, and still others don't even realize they are doing it.
I can hardly believe how fortunate I have been on the trail in receiving trail magic. Let me see if I can list all the foods I have consumed that have provided by trail angels.
Granola bars
Hots dogs
Baked beans
Oranges
Cocoa
Brownies
Beef jerky
Breakfast pastries
Donuts
Bananas
Cookies
Grapes
Gatorade
Candy of all sorts
Chocolate
Chips
Biscuits and gravy
I never expected to be giving trail magic while on the trail, but many hikers have thanked me for singing with my ukulele and have called that trail magic too.
There are so many generous people out there helping others! Thank you!
